Welcome to "Europe's Art In Context"!
We are American students of Geneva College, in Rome. We are studying art, and we are investigating the meanings and histories behind symbols in European art.
In Europe, hard work and creativity collided over many millennia and left behind paintings, sculptures, buildings, and written works which continue to teach and inspire us to this day. Throughout our time studying in Rome, Italy, we have been exposed to a myriad of art forms, from graffiti by an unknown hand to Michelangelo’s frescoed ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
We believe that every piece of art contains a message carefully crafted into the piece by the artist’s hand. Europe is teeming with art, but what does it all mean? This is the question we seek to investigate and answer through our blog – Europe’s Art in Context. Through this blog we investigate the symbolism in art (of all varieties) we have personally encountered. In each post we delve into the histories, meanings, controversies, and hidden symbols of a unique piece of art.
